Main Floor - Three Rooms, Bath, Sun Porch and Spa Porch
If
you've come this far, you'd probably like a few details about our home. The
main floor consists of three rooms and a bath, all
described below. There are 9' ceilings, plastered walls and, hardwood floors
on the main level. New insulated glass tilt-in windows (low E glass) throughout
house)
Living
Room - 13' x 25' - It has a gas logs in the original fireplace
with mantel, original ceiling fixture, built in bookcases, original woodwork,
and four
windows and a door to the side porch next to the driveway. Direct TV is currently
available.
Dining
Room - 11" 5" x 13' 3" - The dining room has the
original ceiling light with five bulbs and a 1940's version of a "dimmer
switch." You can turn on all five of the bulbs, three, or two. A modern
dimmer switch also controls the light.
Built in shelves, a door to the spa porch and three windows complete the bright and airy room.
The front door, hallway and stairway to second story are between the living room and dining room.
Kitchen -
13'2" x 13' 2" - When we purchased the home there was no kitchen.
When the house was built the
original owners had their kitchen in the basement. However, this room was
laid out perfectly for a kitchen, adjacent to the dining room. We added the
oak
cabinets
with countertops and Bill, the furniture maker, made the open shelves.
He also placed a shelf above the windows and added halogen lights for task
lighting. The three windows provide plenty of ventilation along with the
ceiling fan and light.
At
the other end of the main counter is more shelves with two plate racks and
two appliance garages. There are lazy susans in the lower corners at both
ends of the counter.
The sink is a white, double acrylic sink with a high spout faucet and spray and a white Maytag dishwasher.
A narrow shelf of wormy chestnut runs the full length of the counter between the sink and the wide window sill, also a new addition added by us.
On
the opposite wall of the kitchen (also containing the basement door) are
the tall pantry cabinet with pull out drawers (added by Bill), vent fan with
lights,
pan drawers, and a hookup for a gas stove. The gas stove and the refrigerator
do not stay with the house. The Cherry kitchen island also does not stay.
A
new 12 lite wooden door to the sunroom porch was added this spring. It makes
the kitchen much brighter.

Back
Sun Porch - 7'3" x 27' 3' - When we purchased
the house the back porch was in pretty bad shape with broken windows, ceiling
falling down, etc. We insulated it, put down new floors (after leveling them),
new walls, insulated glass windows, insulation in the ceiling, burlap
ceiling covering, lights and a fan, and a gas Blue Flame heater. A door
leads out
to the
porch on
the northeast end of the house and a door in the other end leads to the 6'
5" x 7' 5" utility room with washer and dryer hookups.
Spa Porch - 12' x 22' - The porch was added
three years ago and is a lovely place to eat lunch, have a barbecue or entertain
guests. The Great Lakes spa is here, and our houseplants love to spend the
summer here as well including our 27 year old Staghorn Fern.
The upstairs has four bedrooms, a walk-in closet, and a shower
bath. The bathroom door was painted by West Virginia artist/wood carver,
Two
bedrooms are 11' 4" x 13' 2' and are presently being used
for a Master Bedroom (next to the bath) and a Guest Room. Two rooms are 11'
5" x 13' 2" (presently being used for an office) and 11' 10" x
13' 1" (presently
being used for a sewing room). Each room has a jog to accommodate the chimney.
The walk-in closet is 6' 1" x 8' and the bath is 6' 3" x 7' 10".
The rooms are
symmetrical
with
three
on
each
side
of the
center stairway.
Interesting
fact: When we purchased the house
we asked the family relatives why there was a niche in the wall at the top
of the stairs. It looked like it was made to accommodate a
statue
or something
very narrow. No one knew anything about its origin, so we turned it into
book shelves. It is complete with the original baseboard.
